I was disappointed to find out by way of a BBC website that approximately 650,000 people were murdered in Iraq. A figure which could have been considerably lower had the Unted Nations called for peace as soon as the invasion took place. Only Government buildings and military targets should have been hit, and yet the United States Government acted indiscriminately by bombing innocent civilian targets, bridges and roads, which should have been avoided. A Russian website considered the invasion of Iraq, illegal and a war crime, and I am inclined to agree. Governments should adpot a more comprehensive voting system and consult with their peers before going to war.
No one can predict the number of casualties or outcome of any conflict. Every war has a price tag, and anyone who thinks that injuries and death can be excluded from that price tag is living in 'cloud cuckoo land.' If all diplomatic routes have been exhausted and war is the only alternative, then surely casualties and loss of life should be kept to an absolute minimum. Some wars are unavoidable and should only be considered as a last resort.
The invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan was criminal in many respects, and the detention of hundreds of people in Guantanamo bay is an abhorrent crime. I don't believe anyone is innocent until proven guilty, people are either guilty or innocent until proven otherwise. The USA and UK invaded Iraq and Afghanistan where they completely destroyed the infrastructure in Iraq, and destabilized several regions in the Middle East, by causing an enormous humanitarian crisis where millions of refugees were forced to evacuate their countries. Unfortunately the major humanitarian crisis was very rarely exposed by the media, and probably won't be highlighted while President Bush gets on his high horse and takes the moral high ground over the war in Osettia. At the moment Russia is protecting vulnerable and threatened regions which have been violated by Georgia.
As there seems to be a cold war between Russia, the UK and USA, coupled with other reasons which have contributed to the hostile relationship, then perhaps everyone should go through the correct diplomatic channels to bring about peace in South Osettia, a region that was attacked by Georgia. A barrage of criticism and insults by leaders from the west who have in the past committed even worse atrocities on the war front, will not bring about a speedy resolution to the current war or any other disputes.
The United Nations commented about the humanitarian crisis in favour of Georgia, and were not impartial about the escalating conflict. It's a shame the United Nations could not have done more to prevent the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, perhaps they will do more to prevent other countries from going to war in the future.
