Video: Hugh Laurie sailing

With his family back in London, British Actor and star of the medical drama 'House,' Hugh Laurie took a lonely cruise around Marina Del Rey to take a break from the schedule a hit TV show demands. Laurie has confessed: There are days when I actually lose it and it's not pretty. I'm not proud to say that I punched a door recently. The sheer volume of work, my struggles with the American accent, trying to keep the energy up for 12 to 14-hour stretches can be draining and overwhelming. I have two problems with his "stress," #1: His American accent is terrible, awful. And #2: How much time off does he get from the show? I understand that for a few weeks of filming it's non-stop and almost 24-hours a day but it doesn't film year 'round.

You have got to be kidding. His American accent is incredibly accurate! He's such a wonderful actor and House is the best show ever.

his accent is AWFUL - I am British. But I do love Hugh Laurie - House is gory and lame.

can we get some background music for these videos? how about 'I'm sailing' by Rod Stewart for this one?

how does talking out of the back of your throat pass for an American accent?

Laurie is no where as bad and he is a far better actor but it reminds of Tom Cruise's awful attempt at an Irish accent in "Far & Away."

Are you nuts? His accent is dead on. Maybe the British can detect something we Americans can't, but I think he does a phenomenal job! I love the show too.

First of all, how could a British person possibly have the authority to say whether his American accent is good or not? I would never be so pretentious as to say whether an American actor had a proper British accent.

As an American, I was very surprised last week when my husband told me he was British.

Maybe the British people commenting here can tell us as clearly ignorant Americans who does a proper accent as one of us, if not the award-winning Hugh Laurie. And since Laurie himself comments on how much harder and longer people work here, maybe the video poster can also straighten him out as to his obviously poor work ethic.

i thought his accent was good

i'm an american and i had no clue that he WASN'T an american. i don't know how brithsh people can badmouth his american accent when americans think it's believable.

also, with his family on the other side of the world most of the year and grueling 16-hour days for 8~9 months a year, i can see why this guy can be stressed. give him a break... i've worked with him before and he's a very humble perfectionist... very un-celebrity-like in a good way.

I feel a Hugh Laurie backlash is way past overdue-- good start!

The generic American accent is not easy emulate. That's why so many use the various regional dialects such as the easily recognized "Southern" or "Bostonian". I'd say, as an expert in the field, that his attempt is very good and has almost a perfect intonation of a Mid to Upper Michigan accent. I'm not sure if that was intentional, but well done none the less.

Another American here to confirm he does an EXCELLENT- top notch American accent.

Really surprised the British here think they can pass judgment on something like this but alrighty?

Basically, until I looked him up, I am yet another person who did not realize he WASN'T an American.

I am also standing up for Hugh Laurie on his accent - it is incredible and I think Americans would know the best on our accurate his accent is. I could not believe he was British when I found out. And yes, I bet it would be very hard trying to do that accent for 12 hours a day!

I, an American, second all the other Americans when they say that Hugh does a phenomenal job with his accent! Never a false note. Heck, with his audition tape, he fooled the creator David Shore himself (who prides himself on his knowledge of accents, and who was tired of all the foreign actors auditioning for the job and so was specifically looking for a "good AMERICAN actor") into believing he was just the American actor Shore had been looking for. As for the gravelly voice, we females over in America find it sexy as he11. (And we also love his beautiful British accent.) Ok, heck, we just love him, period. If y'all don't want him, we'll be happy to take him off your hands.

you are all deaf. His accent is horrid. He is wonderful though.

You are hysterical! I'm convinced now that you're just having us on -- maybe so you'll get a lot of posts, or maybe you just like to rile people up . . . .

One correction. It was not David Shore, it was Executive Producer Bryan Singer.

You Brits should be ashamed of yourselves. You have no idea what a brilliant actor and amazing man you have from your country.
You have no idea how hard it is to do what he does on HOUSE. AND, his American accent IS spot on. I don't know how on earth you can say differently.
Maybe we'll just keep him over here for awhile. How would that be? We at least appreciate him.

If you went from shooting 6 or so episodes a year to 24 episodes plus you are playing the title character - you'd be stressed too. A show in America can start shooting around August and may not stop until April or May. Sure there are breaks in between that, but good grief - the man is thousands on miles away from his wife and children. If I were in that spot, I'd punch a few walls too. Give the Guy a break, he's given us one of the greatest characters of television history.

I'm another one of those poor, deluded Americans that think his accent is great. The first time I saw Hugh on an award show I thought his BRITISH accent sounded strange. Of course that was after watching him on House for a year. And as for his workload perhaps if the writer of this article tried working 12-16 hours a day for nine months he would realize how stressful it is.

Okay, whoever wrote this article can go eat a dick. Seriously. Hugh Laurie's accent is brilliant, even if he think it's horrible. The cute little bugger fooled me-- I had no idea he really had a British accent until I heard him talk off-clock for the first time! Second-- ACTING IS NOT A CAKE WALK. Yes, those 12-14 hours days can really KICK YOU IN THE ASS. Even though actors don't shoot year 'round, those stressful days add up. I highly admire him for his dedication and spirit, even when he feels he has none. Your fans appreciate you and love all that you do, Hugh! We're so proud of you.
