Padma Lakshmi said that she turned to charity work to help her get over her marriage to Salman Rushdie after the split. The chef and TV host admitted that she was distraught after her separation from the novelist and spent most of her time crying, unable to get out of bed. A helpful friend suggested working with the AIDS charity Act Now India, and Padma says that after touring orphanages filled with HIV-positive children, she thought, "Ok, I don't have it worse than these people.
